Jultakdongsi (啐啄同時) is a traditional Korean expression that literally describes a mother hen and a chick working together to break an eggshell.
The chick inside the egg pecks at the shell from within, signaling that it is ready to emerge. This is called Jul (啐). Hearing this signal, the mother hen pecks from the outside to help the chick break free. This is called Tak (啄).
If the mother hen breaks the shell too early, before the chick is ready, the chick may not survive. Conversely, if the chick struggles alone without external help, it may never successfully emerge.
The lesson is simple yet profound:
A new beginning occurs when inner readiness and external support meet at exactly the right moment.
Traditionally, this phrase was used in Confucian and Buddhist teachings to describe the perfect timing between a teacher and a student—the moment when guidance is offered precisely when the learner is ready to understand.
